Presentation title:
Spillover effects of All-Russian Olympiad
Presentation description
The present paper explores the effect of the All-Russian Olympiad on the results of the Unified State Exam (USE), the universal exam for high school graduates used in the admission process to the Russian universities. The paper has three main contributions. First, it provides the first, to the best of our knowledge, exhaustive overview of the system of competitions for the talented students in Russia. Second, it presents a new dataset that embraces the data on participants of the Olympiad. Third, it exploits the regression discontinuity design to evaluate the effect of the participation in the Olympiad on the student’s peers. We document a considerable heterogeneity of the spillover effects depending on the subject group.
